Also known as: Total Testosterone, Serum Testosterone

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, important for muscle mass, bone density, libido, and mood. Women also produce smaller amounts.[MedlinePlus (NIH)]

What This Test Measures

This test measures the total testosterone level in your blood. Free testosterone (unbound) can also be measured.[Mayo Clinic]

Why It's Important

  • Testosterone levels help diagnose hypogonadism, infertility, and hormonal disorders.[MedlinePlus (NIH)]

  • Low testosterone causes fatigue, decreased libido, muscle loss, and mood changes.[Cleveland Clinic]

Normal Range

Men: 270-1,070 ng/dL. Women: 15-70 ng/dL.

Note: Levels vary by age, time of day (highest in morning), and laboratory.

High Values

Low Values

Low testosterone causes fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction, depression, and loss of muscle mass. Causes include aging, obesity, diabetes, and pituitary problems.[Cleveland Clinic]

Test Preparation

Blood should be drawn in the morning when testosterone levels are highest.[MedlinePlus (NIH)]
